CONSTRUCTION NEWTS!!

This week I see Construction News has told of how the discovery of a Great crested Newt colony has SAVED in the region of £1,000,000 at Ashton-under-Lyne Waste Water Treatment Plant. The discovery of the newt colony on the site allowed United Utilities to apply to local planning authority Tameside Borough Council for the provision of a replacement newt hibernacula on redundant land it owns to the north of the railway line. The discovery has meant that spoil which would have otherwise had to be dumped off site could be incorporated in the construction of the new newt habitat. The project manager Mr Andy Parker explains the scenario to Construction News "Those little creatures have saved 5,700 muck-away vehicles movements, some 7 tonnes of carbon dioxide and probably about £1 million. The council would have never allowed that land to be used without them.
